Opatija is situated in the Kvarner Bay, in which the Mediterranean has deepened into the mainland of Central Europe at the foot of Mount Ucka. With its rich history and old-world charm Opatija is surly one of the most unique destinations. The Lungomare Promenade is a favorite among visitors of Opatija. Walking along the coast, undisturbed by traffic and city rush it is the perfect place for an easy and romantic stroll.
The promenade was completed in 1889, when Opatija was declared a health resort. It stretches from Volosko to Lovran, 12 kilometers in length. The girl with the seagull on her hand is a symbol of Opatija, but also of the whole of Kvarner Bay. As you walk along the Lungomare and admire the elegant sculpture, you may not even realize that in the same place once stood a symbol of pain and tragedy. After Count Arthur Kesselstadt was killed in a storm that struck Opatija, his family erected a sculpture by Madonna del Mare to take care of his soul and preserve the memory of the unfortunate Count.
The Park Angiolina was created in the period from 1845 to 1860 in the vicinity of Villa Angiolina, which was then the property of Iginio Scarpe, a great lover of nature. The park contains many plants that have been brought from different parts of the world. Many exotic herbs give the characteristic of exclusivity and a combination of trails through indigenous laurels.
Volosko is a small fisherman’s village that has always been one with the sea. The Mediterranean spirit is woven into the architecture of Volosko, a place whose stone steps and narrow streets hide small art galleries and atelier. Friendly artist will gladly let you peek into their small universe. With several small family perfect beaches and a few excellent restaurants, you can really enjoy an afternoon hiding from city rush.
At the foot of the green of Ucka and at the end of the blue Kvarner, small towns Ika and Icici are situated on gentle slopes. Both boast beautiful examples of villas created by renowned architects for the then distinguished guests. In addition to the beauty of architecture, the sites also offer an excellent range of sports activities to getting to know Ucka and its slopes.
Your last stop on Lungomare is picturesque small town Lovran. Lovran and the hinterland are the place of well-known gastronomic manifestations: “Cherry Days” in June, when delicacies of the famous Lovran cherries are prepared and “Marunada” – an autumn festival of sweets made of unique Lovran chestnut – marun.
