Vis island an isolated getaway fit for the stars
After Dubrovnik, Vis island is getting placed on the map thanks to “Mamma Mia: Here we go Again!”
This farthest Dalmatian island is unique in many ways. Apart from being geographically isolated it takes about 3 hours by ferry from Split to reach it. For almost 50 years this was the military base of the Yugoslav Army and completely closed for visitors, thus the beautiful nature remained untouched by mass tourism. The island of Vis is rich in history as well as many underground tunnels and bunkers, some of which are nowadays turned into real tourist attractions!
While there do not miss visiting Komiža, a beautiful fishing town on the western part of the island. Cut off by the rest of the island and completely facing the open sea as part of the faraway Adriatic islands it is rich in fish, especially tuna.
Here you can experience something unique – how to sail a traditional sailing boat – the Falkuša. A traditional fishing boat used by Komiža fishermen with a design adapted to their specific needs, who went to long fishing expeditions in the open seas. This will be no easy feat but with the experienced guiding hand of your instructor you will sail along this amazing island.
If an active vacation is not what you had in mind we suggest exploring the island by a private speedboat that would allow you to enjoy these unspoiled shores.
Be sure to visit the beautiful Stiniva Cove where you can relax and unwind. This pebble beach of unusual shape – surrounded by high cliffs on the left and right sides that open to the sea by a narrow passage – in 2016 was declared the most beautiful beach in Europe.
The eastern coast of the Komiža bay is home to numerous pebble beaches such as the Gusarica, Nova posta, Velo zalo. In the town of Vis you can swim on the pebble beach of Prirovo, and if you are looking for sandy beaches look no further than Vela Smokova, Milna, Zaglav and Stončica.
We especially recommend a trip to the island of Bisevo and its well-known Blue cave that will delight you with its dance of light. This is due to the sun’s rays reflecting on the bottom of the cave and illuminating it and any object in the water with a silvery shimmer. This beautiful phenomenon is best seen around noon. Nothing less appealing is the Green Cave, located in the southwestern part of Ravnik island. The cave is named after the green glow created by the green algae at the bottom of the sea.
Tired of the busy life, stress and bland food? Leave it all and come to Vis where you will be bathed in sunshine and refreshed with domestic sea food. Try local specialties such as octopus patties, lobster, marinated and grilled fish as well as the famous viška cake. These tasty and fresh dishes can only be savored with authentic local wines – the Vugava and the world famous Plavac Mali.
